How to Choose Between Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration, and Reverse Osmosis? A Membrane Separation Technology Comparison.

2026-02-26 16:38:27
times

1. Typical Applications

- Ultrafiltration (UF)

- Pretreatment for NF/RO systems

- Removal of turbidity, bacteria, viruses, suspended solids

- Concentration and separation of proteins, enzymes, macromolecules

- Reclaimed water, drinking water pretreatment

- Nanofiltration (NF)

- Selective softening: remove hardness (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺), heavy metals

- Remove color, natural organic matter (NOM), pesticides

- Partial desalination, monovalent salt permeation

- Food, beverage, pharmaceutical purification

- Reverse Osmosis (RO)

- High-level desalination (seawater, brackish water)

- Production of ultrapure water / deionized water

- Zero liquid discharge (ZLD)

- High-level wastewater reuse and resource recovery

2. How to Choose: Simple Decision Flow

1. Only need to remove particles, bacteria, turbidity

   → Choose UF

2. Need to remove hardness, color, small organics, but keep some salts

   → Choose NF

3. Need to remove almost all dissolved salts and produce high-purity water

   → Choose RO

4. For high-quality reuse or resource recovery:

   → Usually UF + RO or UF + NF + RO combined process

3. Strengths and Limitations

- UF: Low pressure, low cost, high flux, easy operation;

  Cannot remove dissolved salts or small molecules.

- NF: Moderate desalination, good for selective separation;

  Narrow application range compared to RO.

- RO: Highest removal efficiency, universal for desalination;

  Higher pressure and energy consumption, sensitive to fouling.

4. Conclusion

- UF: For macromolecule and suspended matter separation.

- NF: For selective removal of multivalent ions and organics.

- RO: For deep desalination and high-purity water production.

They are complementary, not mutually exclusive, and are often combined in industrial resource recovery and reuse systems.
